Phytovolatilization is defined as the uptake and removal of a pollutant by a plant, followed by the release of the contaminant a changed version of the contaminant into the atmosphere by the plant during transpiration.

In our study, the leaves, roots, soil and associated microorganisms of plants have been evaluated as a possible means of reducing indoor air pollutants. Additionally, a novel approach of using plant systems for removing high concentrations of indoor air pollutants such as kitchen smoke, urbrunt kitchen, LPG organic solvents, and possibly radon has been designed from this work. This air filter design combines plants with an activated carbon filter. The rationale for this design air through an activated carbon sand, wooden dust and coco peat bed where smoke, organic chemicals, pathogenic microorganisms and possibly radon are absorbed by the carbon filter. Plant roots and their associated microorganisms then destroy the pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and the organic chemicals, eventually converting all of these air pollutants into new plant tissue. It is believed that the decayed radon product would be taken up the plant roots and retained in the plant tissue.

What is the AQI?
 
The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or unhealthy your air is, and what associated health effects might be a concern. The AQI focuses on health effects you may experience within a few hours or days after breathing unhealthy air. The AQI is calculated for four major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particle pollution, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide. For each of these pollutants, EPA has established national air quality standards to protect public health.
 
EPA is currently reviewing the national air quality standard for nitrogen dioxide. If the standard is revised, the AQI will be revised as well.
